Rear Wheels
Again the rear wheels were a casting and relatively straight forward machining job. One of the questions I get asked is why did I do it on the Boxford and not the Harrison? Well I like using the Boxford, its a nice machine with very little wear. It hasn't had a hard life and has always been in the hands of model engineers. Its a later model AUD which means it has a 5" swing. The Harrison on the other hand has spent its life in the College where I worked and has had a hard life! Although it has some wear its not bad but somehow the smaller parts lend themselves to be turned on the Boxford, chucks are more in scale with the components!
To broach the keyways I first had to make a Hydraulic press, I utilised my 10 tonne automotive body kit. One wheel has a hole drilled in the centre boss. This is to insert a pin to lock the differential. I made the two radius rods which locate the axle and allow adjustment for the drive chain.
The last Photograph shown the axle mounted on the chassis.
