Rear Axle Bearings
The rear axle bearings are a Gunmetal casting. I machined a flat surface to use as a datum, laid out the 4 holes for the through bolts to hold the two halves together using the DRO. I then split the bearing using a slitting saw, bolted the 2 halves back together and machined them in the lathe boring the hole to size. I then cleaned up the remaining surfaces on the mill, made the oil cups and soft soldered them in place. The holes for securing the 2 halves together pass through the block and a clamp plate for the spring is bolted down into the same tapped holes. As is usual practice there is a centre bolt on the spring and this locates in a hole in the keep plate and bearing block.
